From Bakersfield to Fresno was a series of little towns built on agriculture, all with downtowns in varying degrees of revitalization. And all with big vibrant strip malls on the outskirts.
The ones that were largely abandoned were, despite the plaques and rich history, just plain depressing. But the good thing was that any effort really stood out. The murals, the benches, the public art, the brick walk ways… In some towns these all came together along with restaurants and stores and the experience was pretty cool. Just to be able to stroll around is such a different thing than pulling up in a car.
